The Icon, a prayer made visible, holds the singular capacity to draw one into the still presence of God in the midst of the chaos of daily life. Iconographic Arts Institute
Just as you would not know all the people in my family photo albums, icons can look like strangers until you get to know the stories and saints represented in them.
Icons are "written", not painted - though the writing involves paint, the icons themselves are visual representations of Sacred Scripture. They communicate Eternal Truth in the same way that Scripture does, by the Holy Spirit.
We must be still and still moving Into another intensity For a further union, a deeper communion... T.S. Eliot Four Quartets
Icons are not "graven images" nor "idols “although anything that takes the place of God can be. They are meant to be visual aids to prayer, drawing us into God's story, always pointing to Jesus.

Sinai Christ video. The making of an icon.

ThIs video takes you on a little journey of how this commissioned icon was made. Every 2-4 hours a photo was taken. Details of different stages from line drawing, layers of skin color and gold application are shown. The final 3 minutes at the end show a progression video of the face alone.
